AR Menu (W.I.P)

AR Menu (W.I.P)

Status: Work in Progress

Duration: 2 Months

This is a project for my Major Studio class in Parsons the new school.

I did an AR Menu project since my huge passion with designing within restaurant industry. And main purpose was trying to tell the story behind the dish to improve diners’ experience before they even saw the dish.

Prototype

The idea was showing the total time cost behind each dish to tell the story behind it.

Why the story is important?

The documentary series made by Netflix which called “Chef’s Table” was my original inspiration. When the chef talked about how many times and how many research they did for invent a red yolk egg dish, I was completely shocked. Somehow, I never thought about the invisible hard works behind a fantastic dish. It’s time to show some respect to those tangible things.

Design Principle + Potential Target Audience

Art Manifesto

Art Manifesto

What’s a manifesto? What does it have to do with 21st century design?

All designers have a tacit or explicit “manifesto” of design values/ideas/axioms that, sometimes loosely, sometimes closely, help guide and direct their work. Having such principles can help designers keep their own voice; help them resist external pressures to cater to commercial or technical trends, and give their work a more critical edge. Often it gives designers confidence to be bolder in their work.

Tower of Babel

Tower of Babel

Prototype

This is a speculative design project to show the important influence of language on the human social engine. In this project, I am rebuilding “the Tower of Babel” by creating a parametrical translator for different languages. Through this translator, any human language can be parameterized so that it could be learned by both human and machines. Bifröst[1] is the name of this fictional translator.

(B-A-S-I-L)

[1]. In Norse mythology, Bifröst is a burning rainbow bridge that reaches between Midgard (Earth) and Asgard, the realm of the gods.

Experiment of Orthography

I then generated a set of posters rooted in the combination of English pronunciation based typeface and ancient Chinese orthographic systems. Those posters aimed to explore the boundary of different language systems.

JavaScript Based Program

I also created a parametrical translator program using JavaScript with multiple functions including typeface comparison and the typography adjustment system which introduced new ways of learning the typography of language. The video of this program was attached.

Landscape Design Plan Book

Landscape Design Plan Book

I designed the layout of a 300 pages landscape-design plan book for NITA Design Group (a top large design and engineering consulting institute with its headquarters in Amsterdam). The following pages are the illustration I drew for this plan book.
